We encourage local councils and local people to consider the impact of their transport choices in terms of the carbon emissions they generate.
We can measure the impact of transport using carbon footprint calculators, such as WWF, Carbon Independent and National Energy Foundation.
Holidays and long distance travel often has the biggest impact – flying has significantly higher emissions than train or car journeys. The carbon emissions from attending virtual events are tiny by comparison.
Most of our journeys are local, often less than five miles. Walking or cycling instead of using a car is better for local air quality.
Electric bicycles, cars, taxis, buses, vans, trains have carbon emissions in line with the decarbonisation of the electricity on the national grid, significantly less than their fossil fuelled equivalents. Batteries and other infrastructure costs do not outweigh the fuel benefits.
