{"id":1419,"date":"2021-11-27T18:40:50","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T18:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bishopsstortfordclimategroup.org\/?page_id=1419"},"modified":"2021-12-06T14:30:59","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T14:30:59","slug":"community-climate-gathering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bishopsstortfordclimategroup.org\/?p=1419","title":{"rendered":"Community Climate Gathering"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Community Climate Gathering was held at Birchwood High School on 6th and 7th November 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 80 people from Bishop\u2019s Stortford and the surrounding villages took part over the weekend to answer the question: what can we do together to fight climate change and to improve our environment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gathering was organised by the Bishop\u2019s Stortford Climate Group and was funded by the Community Fund of the National Lottery, the Friends of the Earth Climate Fund and East Herts District Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outcomes from the Community Climate Gathering on 6th and 7th November 2021 were captured in two display whiteboards. Electronic versions of these images are available to download here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\\\"https:\/\/bishopsstortfordclimategroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/CCG-day-1-scaled.jpg\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener\\\">Day 1<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\\\"https:\/\/bishopsstortfordclimategroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/CCG-day-2-scaled.jpg\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener\\\">Day 2<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Day 1: Where are we and where do we want to be?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We talked about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Things about our community that make us feel proud<\/li><li>The future that we want to see in Bishop\u2019s Stortford<\/li><li>The things we need to pay attention to, to help us get there.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This graphic captures the heart of the conversations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\\\"wp-block-image size-large\\\"><img src=\\\"https:\/\/bishopsstortfordclimategroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ccg-image1-1024x716.jpg\\\" alt=\\\"\\\" class=\\\"wp-image-1420\\\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Day 2: What do we need to do?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We talked about the actions we are willing to take to move us towards the future we want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To begin with we brainstormed all the actions that people in the group would like to see. Key themes that emerged were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At home: energy assessments, reducing demand, information sharing and advice about renewable energy<\/li><li>At community level: crowdfunding community renewables, community heat networks, community energy group<\/li><li>In new builds: press for higher standards, use our influence and (if needed) direct action<\/li><li>A heat decarbonisation plan for the whole town<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Biodiversity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Green areas, wild spaces and green corridors<\/li><li>Make more of the river as a green corridor<\/li><li>Ensuring access for all<\/li><li>Wilder gardens (= carbon sinks.)<\/li><li>Cleaning up\/ litter picking to protect biodiversity.<\/li><li>Pocket parks<\/li><li>Green roofs<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Circular Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Repair caf\u00e9<\/li><li>Reuse options: Freecycle, Olio, charity shops etc.<\/li><li>Community recycling facilities, central location in Jackson Square<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Single Use Plastics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Refill shop<\/li><li>Making different choices<\/li><li>\u2018Single use plastic free\u2019 town<\/li><li>Takeaways to avoid single use plastics<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Engaging Businesses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Support for local businesses: buy local<\/li><li>Transport plans for food<\/li><li>Using our legs more, cars less<\/li><li>Waste especially single use plastics<\/li><li>Consumption<\/li><li>Food waste<\/li><li>You count<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p election<\/li><li>Protesting and direct action<\/li><li>Demanding information and transparency<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Funding and finance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Community Finance Initiative to fund projects<\/li><li>Funding for eco start-up businesses<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ways of community.<\/li><li>Actions that don\u2019t need politics to deliver are low-hanging fruit.<\/li><li>Stick with it \u2013 don\u2019t give up half way through.<\/li><li>SMART objectives: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound.<\/li><li>Be respectful to others.<\/li><li>Aspirational goals<\/li><li>Ask those not on board: what are the barriers to change?<\/li><li>Adopt a \u2018can do\/will do\u2019 attitude<\/li><li>Make small but permanent changes to work towards solutions<\/li><li>Commit<\/li><li>Re-establish the principles of transition towns<\/li><li>Small changes done by all = big global difference<\/li><li>\u2018Rather than be defeated by the problem, be inspired by the creativity of the solutions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p Long term: group purchasing and community energy<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Grow Green Spaces<\/td><td>Community growing food in public spaces that anyone can take<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Waste Management<\/td><td>Making it easier for people to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refill and Donate<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Anti-idling campaign<\/td><td>To cut emissions and improve air quality<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Composting food waste<\/td><td>Reducing food waste sent to landfill\/incineration through home &amp; community composting<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vegan Food Map<\/td><td>Helping people live a vegan lifestyle<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Directory of Eco-Groups<\/td><td>Linking different groups in the community. A guide to who\u2019s doing what.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Network of Eco-Clubs<\/td><td>Linking eco-clubs across all secondary schools in the town.
